Hi Betty, that might be the point of Maslow, but my article is not about what Maslow really meant or intended. It is a reaction to the general (cliché) use and understanding of the pyramid model. It seems he didn’t even draw the model like that in his life. It’s about how many managers, business trainers, self-development gurus sell self-actualization as the pinnacle of human development. In doing so, they take away meaning (what do I serve in the bigger picture?) and downgrade the essence of our survival (a healthy ecosphere). Also, they often make self-actualization a purely personal thing, let alone something happening within the human society bubble. This brings about all the dangers of individualism like self-indulgence, lack of empathy, and consumerism. This too is not true self-actualization, yet, as with the cliché of the Maslow pyramid, this is what it all too often ends up as. Something you might rank within BAU, business as usual. The point is we need models that help keep our planet healthy. And I hope I helped create one.
